Integrated Informatics Brings Marco Commander's Spatial Data Discovery To ArcGIS Pro

Updated: Dec 19, 2019

Houston, TX (US) – Integrated Informatics is excited to announce a new solution for professionals actively overseeing geospatial data within Esri’s ArcGIS Pro environment. Integrated Marco Commander for Pro v6.0 was recently released, bringing the high performance and parallel processing approach from Integrated Marco Commander to geospatial data inventorying, identification, and management to customers working with those unique data types found in ArcGIS Pro. This solution is a component of the Integrated Marco Studio suite of Knowledge Management applications featuring Spatial Data Discovery, File Modification, and Repoint and Repath capability for Esri users.

Spatial Data Discovery in Pro

The Integrated Marco Commander application is one of the most robust toolsets available in the Integrated Marco Studio suite developed by Integrated. This solution is deployed through command-line and is designed to fully utilize the resources of server-class machines for inventorying spatial datasets and data source references, identifying broken data sources, repointing and repathing spatial data, and much more.

With the introduction of this toolkit for the ArcGIS Pro platform, the same processing power can now be brought to those file formats native to Esri’s newest software. The Integrated Marco Commander for Pro toolkit is built to address these unique data types and projects – all while maintaining output and results within the same central database as employed by the standard Integrated Marco Commander application. This database – aptly referred to as the Marco Database – is a series of 30+ tables in SQL Server, Oracle, or SQLite that store all of the attributes and details found by the various tools during system scans. Examples of information gathered include:

  • File names and paths of ArcGIS Pro Map Projects (.aprx).

  • Ownership of ArcGIS Pro Map Projects (.aprx), Layer Files (.lyrx, .lyr), and other data sources.

  • Date files were created as well as date of last modification or access.

  • Geographic transformations associated with projects.

  • Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS) used in data frames and maps.

  • Coordinates set for datasets, bookmarks, etc.

  • Record of network locations (i.e., folders, drives) scanned.

Because these applications utilize the same central database to store inventory details and results, professionals already working with the Integrated Marco Commander application require no additional resources for implementing Integrated Marco Commander for Pro.

The New ‘Go-To’ For ArcGIS Migration

As companies move Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and enterprise data away from ArcMap and towards ArcGIS Pro, many have faced the challenge of reconciling these disparate data formats. For instance, ArcMap projects are based on ArcGIS Map Documents (.mxd) and utilize the .lyr format of Layer Files while ArcGIS Pro employs ArcGIS Pro Map Projects (.aprx) and a platform-specific Layer File format (.lyrx). The Integrated Marco Commander applications are intended to aide professionals in more seamless migrations of these projects.

Used in tandem, the two versions of this toolkit – Integrated Marco Commander v6.0 [for ArcGIS] and Integrated Marco Commander for Pro v6.0 – can assist professionals in:

  • Identifying the ArcGIS Map Documents (.mxd) on the system.

  • Establishing the age, relevancy, and health (e.g., brokenness) of datasets.

  • Determining which projects and their associated ArcGIS Map Documents (.mxd), geospatial data, etc. should be moved to ArcGIS Pro, can be moved to ArcGIS Pro, will require further attention prior to moving, and/or are candidates for archival.

  • Pinpointing those ArcGIS Pro Map Projects (.aprx) already on the system and their relevancy to projects.

  • Keeping track of the status of ArcGIS Pro migration, maintaining an inventory of projects moved or archived – as well as those that require more information before migrating completely.
